Capitol Journal Write-up
"Neither rain, nor snow, nor death of the night, can keep us from delivering" our deadballs: We broke out of our state quarterfinal funk, advancing to the FINAL FOUR for the first time in 3 years. Way to go boys.
And yes it went according to script as we delivered 3 first-half deadballs just when it looked as if their size would deny our ability to get first touch on our free kicks, corners and throws. But Velasco and Kutey have a way about themselves of figuring out just where Nick's head will be.
We also defended well against a solid team who had some nice size. BWhite gave his Player of the Match award to Matthew Holland. Honestly, Matthew is a guy who has been there consistently all year for us in the back. He just does not take any plays off.
Weather was all around us and on us but it just did not play a factor in the match. We had hoped to take advantage of it somewhat, sending some ground shots off the wet turf at their keeper, but we really did not generate much directed at the goal.
But to our defense and midfielder's credit, neither did they. Not much happened during the regular run-of-play.
We now join 3 other Catholic schools in the 5A Final Four: St. James, Kapaun, and Carroll. I am not sure that has happened before. We will take on 2-loss Carroll at 5:00 this Friday, hoping to play our way back to the state finals. The year sure looks as if it will take on a certain symmetry as we and St. James just might get to finish that opening game of the year.
